Mic Test
Find out in seconds whether your microphone works and how you sound. Watch the level, record a short clip and hear yourself. Nothing is uploaded.
Is your microphone working?
Press Start microphone, allow access and speak. You will see your voice live and can record a short clip to hear yourself.
Ready to test
Press Start microphone. Your browser will ask for permission first.
Listen with headphones to hear exactly how others hear you. Recordings stop after 60 seconds.
Voice processing
Browsers clean up your voice the same way video-call apps do. Turn these off to hear the raw microphone signal.
The sound is analysed only on this page. Nothing is uploaded or saved.
How to test your microphone
- Press Start microphone and choose Allow when your browser asks.
- Speak normally. The input level bar and the picture move with your voice and the box below tells you if the level is good, too quiet or too loud.
- Press Record, say a sentence and press Stop. The clip plays back so you hear yourself as others will.
- Have a headset and a laptop mic? Pick another one under Microphone and compare.
What the microphone test shows
Before a call, a podcast, an online lesson or a game session, it is worth checking that the right microphone is selected and that your voice comes through clearly. This test listens to your microphone directly in the browser, just like Zoom, Google Meet, Discord and other web apps, and shows exactly what they receive.
Input level in decibels
The level is shown in dBFS, decibels relative to the loudest sound the microphone can record. 0 dB is the maximum; everything else is negative. Normal speech should mostly land between about −30 and −10 dB. Below −40 dB others will hear you faintly, and if the bar keeps touching 0 dB the sound is clipping and will be distorted. The small marker shows the most recent peak.
Three ways to see your sound
Volume scrolls like a voice recorder, so you can see pauses and loud moments at a glance. Waveform draws the sound wave itself, which is handy for spotting hum or a buzzing noise. Frequency shows bass on the left and treble on the right: a clear voice fills the middle, while a muffled microphone has almost nothing above 4 kHz. The pitch value shows the main frequency of your voice or an instrument, with the musical note.
Record and listen back
Seeing a meter move is good, but hearing yourself is better. Record a few seconds, then listen with headphones. You will notice echo, background noise or a muffled sound much more easily than in a live call. Recordings stay on your device and can be downloaded if you want to keep them.
Voice processing
Browsers clean up your voice with echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, as video-call apps do. These are on by default. Turn them off under Voice processing to hear the raw microphone, which is useful for music and for judging a new microphone.
When there is no sound
If the test says no sound is detected, check the mute switch on your headset or the microphone key on your keyboard, try another microphone from the list and raise the input volume in your system sound settings. On Windows, also check Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone; on a Mac, System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone. The sound is analysed only on this page and is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How can I test my microphone?
Press Start microphone, allow access and speak. If the level bar moves and the box says your microphone is working, it is fine. Record a short clip and play it back to hear how you sound.
Why is my microphone not picking up sound?
Check the mute switch or key, make sure the right microphone is selected in the list, and raise the input volume in your system sound settings. Also allow microphone access for your browser in Windows or macOS privacy settings.
What is a good microphone level?
For speech, aim for about −30 to −10 dB on the meter. Below −40 dB you sound quiet; if the meter keeps hitting 0 dB, the sound clips and becomes distorted.
Can I hear myself in the microphone test?
Yes. Press Record, speak, then press Stop and the clip plays back. Use headphones to hear exactly how others will hear you. Live monitoring is not used because it can cause loud feedback.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The sound is analysed only in your browser. A recording is made only when you press Record, stays on your device and is deleted when you leave the page unless you download it.
