Counting days between dates, explained
Counting days by hand on a calendar is slow and it is easy to miss a day, especially across months of different lengths and leap years. This calculator turns both dates into a simple day number and subtracts them, so the answer is always exact. It then breaks the result down into years, months and days, weeks, working days and weekend days.
Should the end date be included?
By default the calculator counts the nights between two dates: from Monday to Friday is 4 days. That is how you count the length of a hotel stay, the age of something in days or the time left until an event. When every calendar day counts, such as a vacation from Monday to Friday or a contract that runs “from 1 March to 31 March”, tick Include the end date and the result grows by one day, here to 5 days.
Years, months and days
Months have 28 to 31 days, so “1 month” is not a fixed number of days. The calculator adds whole months to the start date for as long as it can, then counts the days that are left. From 31 January to 1 March is therefore 1 month and 1 day: one month after 31 January is the last day of February, and one more day takes you to 1 March. This matches how people and most contracts count months.
Working days and holidays
Working days are Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are counted as weekend days. When you choose a country, public holidays that fall on a weekday are removed from the working day count, and the full list is shown under the result. For the United States the calculator uses the federal holidays with their observed dates, so a 4 July that falls on a Saturday is moved to Friday. For Turkey it uses the official national holidays, including Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Company and state holidays can differ, so check them for important deadlines.
working days = all days − weekend days − holidays on weekdays
Adding and subtracting days
On the Add or subtract days tab you can move a date forward or back by any mix of years, months, weeks and days. Months are added first and then days, so 31 January plus 1 month becomes the last day of February. Tick Count working days only to skip weekends and holidays, which is useful for delivery times, payment terms and notice periods such as “within 10 business days”.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Enter the start date and the end date on the Days between dates tab. The calculator subtracts the two dates and shows the total number of days, along with weeks, months, years and working days. For example, from 1 January to 1 March 2026 is 59 days.
Does the calculator include the end date?
Not by default. From Monday to Friday counts as 4 days, the same way you would count nights or the time until an event. Tick “Include the end date” to count every calendar day, which gives 5 days for the same example.
How are working days counted?
Working days are Monday to Friday. If you choose a country under Public holidays, holidays that fall on a weekday are also left out. The holidays found in your date range are listed under the result.
How do I add business days to a date?
Open the Add or subtract days tab, choose a start date, tick “Count working days only” and enter the number of days. The calculator skips Saturdays, Sundays and, if you chose a country, its public holidays.
Are leap years taken into account?
Yes. Every date is converted to an exact day number, so 29 February in leap years is counted automatically. A full leap year has 366 days.
