    How to play Word Guess

    1. Type any five-letter English word and press Enter. Use the on-screen keyboard or your own keyboard.
    2. Each tile flips to show a color. Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else. Gray means it is not in the word.
    3. Use those clues for your next guess. The keyboard keeps track of every letter you have tried.
    4. Find the word within six guesses to win. Then share your colored grid without giving the answer away.
    5. Come back tomorrow for the next daily word, or switch to Practice to keep playing right now.

A free daily word game for everyone

Word Guess is a short, friendly word puzzle you can play once a day in a couple of minutes. Everyone gets the same hidden word on the same day, so you can compare results with friends, family or coworkers. The answers are common English words that most people know, without plurals that only add an “s”, and the list of accepted guesses is much larger, so you are free to try less common words too.

    What the colors mean

Every guess gets a color for each letter. A green tile is a letter in exactly the right place. A yellow tile is a letter that is in the word but in a different place. A gray tile is a letter that is not in the word at all. Letters can repeat: if the answer has one E and you guess a word with two, only one of them turns green or yellow and the other one turns gray. If the answer has two E’s, both can light up.

    Good strategy

Open with a word full of common letters, such as STARE, ARISE or SLATE. Your second guess should usually test new letters instead of reusing gray ones. Once you have two or three letters, think about where the yellows can still go and which common patterns fit, like -ATCH, -IGHT or -OUND. When only a few words are possible, guess one that splits them apart rather than one of them at random.

    Hard mode and high contrast

In hard mode every letter you have found must be used again: green letters stay in place and yellow letters must appear somewhere in your next guess. Results played in hard mode get a star when you share them. The high contrast option swaps green and yellow for orange and blue, which many people with color vision differences find easier to read.

    Practice, streaks and sharing

Practice mode gives you unlimited random words with their own statistics, so you can warm up or keep going after the daily puzzle. For the daily game the statistics track how many you have played, your win rate, your current and longest streak, and how many guesses you usually need. Share copies a grid of colored squares with the puzzle number. It shows how you did without spoiling the word.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Word Guess free to play?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and nothing to install. It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.

When does the daily word change?

A new daily word is ready every day at midnight in your own time zone. A countdown under the board shows how long until the next one.

Can I play more than one word a day?

Yes. Switch to Practice mode for unlimited random words. Practice games have their own statistics and do not affect your daily streak.

    What is hard mode?

In hard mode any letter you have revealed must be used in later guesses. Green letters must stay in the same spot and yellow letters must be included somewhere.

    Is my streak saved?

Yes. Your games, statistics and settings are stored only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, so clearing site data resets them.
